Masindi, Uganda – River Kafu on the Hoima-Kampala Road has burst its banks due to the ongoing heavy rains in the areas causing floods which have washed away gardens in nearby villages in Masindi District.
The river which is also the border point between Hoima and Kyankwanzi districts runs through Masindi to the West and Nakasongola to the east.
By Thursday this week transport along the bridge was still going on uninterrupted but the level of the river had reached the roof of the bridge meaning any time the bridge may flood interrupting transport.
Last week, the Uganda Red Cross warned that the level of River Kafu had risen by 10m.
“Observations made on River Kafu by our disaster preparedness team indicate that the water level has risen by 10m from its normal level. An alert has been sent to the District Disaster Management committee and Community based response teams to be on high alert we are also sensitizing communities to be vigilant,” a statement from the Head of Communications and Public Relations of the Uganda Red Cross, Irene Nakasiita said.
However, Nakasiita when contacted about the recent happening said they were waiting for reports from their people on the ground.
Meanwhile the Uganda Red Cross distributed 230 menstrual hygiene kits to girls at Rigbo Primary School in Rhino camp, Arua District.
According to Nakasiita, the kit is composed of reusable sanitary pads, knickers, 2 tabs of bathing soap, 2 bars of washing soap, a one metre cotton material (lesu), bucket, pegs, a rope for hanging /drying linen after washing among other personal hygiene effects.
