Kampala, Uganda – Vanilla farmers shall have to wait a little longer to harvest the crop for the second season as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF)
The ministry had set the 15th of December as the date for farmers to start harvesting their vanilla but has been changed to 15th of January 2020 because of the changing weather patterns.
The state minister for agriculture Christopher Kyebazanga explained that the postponement was due to the fact that in some vanilla growing areas the rains delayed and there was late pollination for the crop and could not ripen on time.
Kyebazanga said that the ministry sets the harvest dates to guarantee quality of the crop to compete on the international market. He therefore warned farmers against harvesting immature vanilla.
