Floods caused by torrential rains have cut off Butaleja main road that connects the district to the regional business centre of Mbale town.

Business and transport system has now been paralysed for days since Manafwa River overflew the Butaleja Bridge. The floods also destroyed crops in seven villages in Butaleja Town Council, Himitu and Mazimasa subcounties. The affected villages include Namulo, Kayiti, Lubembe, Dokho, Khibila, Nabweyo, Nakhamya and Nasingi.

The chairperson of Butaleja District, Richard Waya says the situation like this affects the district since it seeks most t s services from Mbale town

Tom Wandera the district environment officer says that Butaleja is always faced with flooding every time Mount Elgon receives too much rain and over seven sub counties have been affected and famers are now counting losses and living in fear of famine out break since their crops have been destroyed by the floods.

The Bugisu region has received a lot of rainfall in May and June even causing landslides which killed six people in Bududa and left hundreds homeless after their houses were washed away.
