KAMPALA,UGANDA- A building at a school in the central Ugandan district of Wakiso was unroofed in a violent storm on Monday.
The unfortunate incident occurred at the Wakiso School of Deaf located at Ssentema in Wakiso about 10kms off Hoima Road. Wakiso School of the Deaf is a government sponsored school and is the only government secondary school for the deaf in the country. Others are integrated or vocational.
According to the Headmaster of the School, Stephen Katongole the storm occurred at about midday and lasted only about 20 minutes. He said that the building that was unroofed is the classroom of S.1 and S.2 and that at the time it was unroofed the students were doing a midterm test.
“We were lucky because the students are deaf they took long to know that the building had been unroofed otherwise they would have run out in the direction where the iron sheets were blown and they would have cut them,” Katongole explained and emphasized that no student was injured.
On the estimated cost of the damage, Katongole said the Board of Governors was going to sit today (Tuesday) and make a report to send to the government and copied to the district.
“The District Education Officer came and visited the school yesterday but no action can be taken until we submit a report,” Katongole as he appealed to non-governmental organisations and other well-wishers to come to their assistance.
James Bataze a senior meteorologist with the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) however said this was an isolated incident and they don’t expect more violent storm like this as the rain season is ending.
“Those are just isolated convective systems. We don’t expect more convective storms because the rain season is about to end,” Bataze said.
