The Ugandan ministries of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and that of Finance, Planning and Economic Development have disagreed over the giveaway of a forest reserve in the eastern district of Mbale.
Recently, two ministries of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and that of Lands, Housing and Urban Development disagreed over the intended give away of Mbale Municipality Forest reserve, loosely known as Mutoto forest along Mbale-Tororo road.
According to Mike Emmanuel Matua, a top officer at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, if the residents are against it, they will stop Mbale Municipal council from giving away the forest reserve
However, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is against the idea of blocking the process and say the issue is on the floor of Parliament and should be only decided upon by the legislators
Mbale legislators had also earlier disagreed on the forest give away. Mbale Municipality MP Jack Wamai was in support of giving away the forest while Budadiri East MP Nathan Nandala Mafabi and John Baptist Nambeshe MP for Manjiya County strongly opposed destroying Mutoto forest to allow developers expand Mbale town.
According to Nambeshe, any growing and right thinking city in the world has secured a forest reserve on its fringes so as to allow fresh aeration and carbon management of the urban setting.
Nambeshe, is now advising Mbale municipal Council not to destroy the forest.
In a recent exclusive interview with Step FM radio, Matua, confirmed that they will stop Mbale Municipal council from giving away the forest reserve
