Busia, Uganda – A cholera outbreak has broken out in the eastern Uganda district of Busia.
So far 13 people have been admitted to Dabani Hospital in Busia District with four of them in a critical condition.
The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), Branch Chairman for Busia, Fred Ouma when contacted on phone said most of the affected were from Busia Municipality.
‘Whenever we have heavy rains here cholera breaks out due to poor sanitation,” Ouma said.
He explained that though most people in the municipality have access to tap water many don’t care to boil it before drinking it.
Ouma said that the Red Cross working with district officials are now carrying out sensitization of the population in the areas where the affected people came from. He also said they plan to disinfect the areas to prevent more outbreaks.
This comes at a time where the country is faced with an Ebola outbreak in the western part of the country.
