Kenya issues another heavy rainfall warning

Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a second heavy rainfall alert in a week.

” Wet weather which is being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to continue this week. Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24hrs is expected as from Wednesday 16th October, 2019 over the North East, Central, Nairobi, South East and the Coastal Regions of Kenya. The rainfall is expected to intensify to more than 40mm in 24hrs from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th October 2019 over the Coast, South Eastern, North Eastern, Western and Central regions including Nairobi Area,” the KMD release says.

According to KMD the areas which will be affected include; Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, parts of Tana River, Lamu, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Muranga, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni.

Others are Taita Taveta, , Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, parts of Kajiado, Nakuru, Marsabit, Mandera and Wajir.

KMD further adds that residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods. Flood waters may suddenly appear even in places where it has not rained heavily and can be deeper and faster than they look especially in semi-arid and urban areas. Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lighting strikes.

“People in landslide prone areas especially over the slopes of Aberdare ranges and Mt. Kenya in central Kenya should be on high alert. The heavy rains and moderate to strong winds may result in storm surges along the coast; hence fishermen and all in the Marine industry should be on high alert. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” the alert concludes.
