Mbale, Uganda – The Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale district, Connie Nakayenze has advised Ugandans to stop settling in the buffer zones of river banks.

Nakayenze was recently addressing mourners during the funeral of a six month old baby who was swept by floods in Busamanga ward Mbale Municipality revealed that several people have encroached on river banks and constructed permanent houses thereby blocking water channels.

The National Environment Act 2019 stipulates that there should not be any activity carried in the buffer zone which is  metres from a river bank.

She said whenever heavy rainfall starts, affected areas experience floods that leave a trail of destruction.

Nakayenze said members of parliament from Bugisu sub region are fighting to ensure that the area is granted a ministry in charge of Bugisu affairs that will handle emergencies like mudslides, floods among others.
